Through the 21st Century Schools Initiative, the Baltimore City Public School System, State of Maryland, and Baltimore City are investing nearly one billion dollars to renovate or replace 28 public schools. Upgrading these schools will make a big difference in what students can do and how well they do in school. It will also give families more support and make neighborhoods better.
To make the most of this investment and to strengthen the link between the schools and the nearby community, the Department of Planning launched a program called INSPIRE (Investing in Neighborhoods and Schools to Promote Improvement, Revitalization, and Excellence). This program focuses on the neighborhoods within a quarter-mile around each school in the 21st Century program. The INSPIRE processes are led by the Department of Planning and involve the collaboration of several city departments and community organizations.
