Why Web Accessibility Is Important
In Baltimore, we believe in a future where everyone has a seat at the table. Our digital strategy is a
testament to this belief, breaking down barriers and opening new avenues for participation and service.
Accessibility isn’t just a guideline; it’s our commitment to the people of Baltimore. We’re dedicated to
creating a digital space where every individual, regardless of ability, can access information, services, and
opportunities freely and easily.
Baltimore City web administrators will make every effort to ensure that any new or updated website
content produced conforms with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Accessibility Initiative’s
(WAI) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level A & AA. We have implemented
Automated, Manual, and Functional testing to ensure compliance with the website (digital content), to detect
WCAG 2.1 non-conformance, and then to correct issues to the best of our ability.
While we cannot anticipate every need or avoid every barrier, we’ve tried to address some key issues to
maximize site accessibility:
- Simple, consistent page layout and standard navigation throughout the site to assist people with
learning disabilities and others who may have difficulty following less organized presentations. - Mandatory white page backgrounds to provide contrast for users with low vision or
colorblindness. - Standard HTML ensures all browsers can access site content.
- Use of ALT tags making alternative text information available for graphical features.
- Menu alternatives for image maps ensure that readers using text-based browsers can access
embedded links. - Smart use of tables, ensuring that table formatting supports access by non-standard browsers.
