Baltimore’s water system is quite old and that includes most of our underground infrastructure (mains). Many water lines are over 100 years old. Age itself does not mean that these mains are no longer usable. Indeed, some very old cast iron pipes from the 1800s are still in excellent condition. Others are in line for replacement or cleaning and lining.
Shifting of the ground means the movement of these same mains, and years of movement results in breaks. These are especially common during the freeze-thaw periods of winter when hundreds of breaks must be addressed. Our crews work night and day, in all kinds of weather, to address repairs and customer concerns. They make sure that our customers continue to receive the best water in the country.
