Let's talk about the different phases of a snow emergency plan in the city. These phases help keep everyone safe when there's a lot of snow.

Phase 1:

It's important for vehicles to have special tires for snow, called snow tires, all-weather radials, or chains on their wheels. If you don't have them, the police can give you a ticket.

  • We also ask residents not to park their cars on the streets marked as "snow emergency routes" before Phase 2 begins. This makes it much easier for the Department of Transportation to clear these roads quickly because parked cars won't get in the way.

Phase 2:

As in Phase 1, you need to have snow tires, all-weather radials, or chains on your vehicle. If you don't, the police can give you a ticket.

  • Here's something very important: You cannot park your car on the streets that are marked as "Snow Emergency Routes." These routes are easy to spot because they have clear signs. If you park on these roads during a snow emergency, you'll get a ticket, and your car might even get towed away! In the downtown area, there are special zones where you can't park your car during certain times. If you do, your car might be taken away. In the neighborhoods, they might move your car to other places where you can park, like schools or recreational areas.
  • During Phase 2, you can also find a list of schools with parking lots where you can leave your car if you need to.

Phase 3:

Now, when Phase 3 is in effect, only emergency vehicles are allowed on the city streets. That means regular cars should stay off the roads, so the emergency vehicles can do their important work.

  • Remember, these rules are in place to keep everyone safe during snowy times. So, make sure your vehicle is ready for the snow and follow the parking rules to avoid any trouble.
