What We Do

Every year, Baltimore has a tax sale. This sale helps the city collect unpaid property taxes and charges. These unpaid bills are like claims on the property.

Here’s how it works:

1. The city holds a public online auction.

2. People bid on these claims.

3. The highest bidder pays the city for all these claims and gets a special certificate.

4. his certificate lets them take the property by going to court.

Property owners can stop a tax sale by “redeeming” the property. To do that, the property owner must  pay the winning bidder for all the claims, interest, and other costs.

Looking for Tax Sale assistance?

The Tax Sale Deferral Program is managed by the Departments of Finance and Housing and Community Development. It lets people keep their property from being sold in a tax sale for a year.
