About Steve Sharkey

Steve Sharkey has worked in a variety of capacities for the City of Baltimore over the past eighteen years. He has distinguished himself through the advancement of government efficiency across multiple Agencies. In his previous role as the Director of Transportation, Steve strengthened partnerships with the Maryland Transit Administration, which led to the successful award of 2 Federal grants totaling over 20 million dollars.  He also implemented a speed camera on Interstate 83 to slow down traffic, which is the road with the most crashes in Baltimore. 

As the Director of the Department of General Services, he has spearheaded special oversight measures which have resulted in a sixty-percent reduction in the building maintenance backlog, enforced greater financial accountability, and initiated significant capital investment in city facilities, among other accomplishments. 

Previously he has served as Director of Special Projects for the Baltimore City Police Department, Division Chief of Special Services and Property Management for the Baltimore City Department of Public Works, and Deputy Director of Baltimore’s CitiStat Program. His work in improving government efficiency has garnered awards from the National Association of County Officials, the Baltimore Downtown Partnership, and the Baltimore National Heritage Area. His successes were chronicled in 2 books: The PerformanceStat Potential by Harvard professor Bob Behn and City on the Line by Andrew Kleine. Mr. Sharkey holds a BA in Political Science from McDaniel College and an MPP from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). He lives in the Federal Hill Neighborhood with his 2 daughters and 2 cats.
